150 contact hours of Japanese or its equivalent

COURSE OBJECTIVES
After a few quarters of this course, you should be able to: meet a number of practical writing needs; write short, simple letters involving personal preferences, daily routine, everyday events, brief synopses and paraphrases, summaries of biographical data, work and school experiences; write a number of frequently encountered Kanji; demonstrate a basic control of both simple and complex sentence structures; distinguish formal and informal styles.

EVALUATION
1. Your performance will be evaluated on a 7-point scale on the following items: The items are: your grammar, writing, reading, aural/listening, oral/speaking, communicative competence skills, and also your attendance, punctuality, performance in class, homework, attention, effort, motivation, and progress (see the STUDENT PROGRESS REPORT if necessary).
2. One final exam (2.5 hours).

TEACHING STYLE
The instructor will create a relaxed, low-anxiety atmosphere through which you can acquire the previously mentioned course objectives with ease. The instructor will use an eclectic teaching method.

*Weekly assignments on specific dates will be available from your instructor in class.

PLEASE NOTE
1. Please be on time for class; otherwise, you interrupt the lesson for others. Regular class attendance and participation are essential for language learning.
2. Excessive absences (more than 3 class meetings) may be cause for repetition of the course.
3. The PROGRESS REPORT will be written for all students who have completed the course work (the FINAL EXAM, assignments, quizzes, and an attendance rate of 80% or higher). Your PROGRESS REPORT will be kept in the Soko Gakuen Records Office, and the Office will release it only upon your request.
4. When you obtain a score of 80% or higher on the final exam, you move up to a higher level class. Soko Gakuen's exit criteria for each class/level are based on the 1987 ACTFL Japanese Language Proficiency Guidelines.

POLICY ON FINAL EXAM
There will be NO MAKE-UP FINAL for this course.
